The Ammann ATR 68 trench rammer is a light 68 kg compactor built for narrow trenches, pipe beds and foundation edges where a vibratory plate simply will not fit.

Its 28 cm ramming shoe reaches a compaction depth of up to 60 cm and delivers 23 kN of impact force, and the 2.2 kW petrol engine keeps the machine independent of any power supply. Rent it from Fortal.

Typical uses

A trench rammer is the right tool wherever the working area is too narrow for a vibratory plate: pipe and cable trenches, foundation edges, footings, manhole surrounds and repairs to kerbs and pavements. Because the ramming shoe transfers its energy deep into the soil, it also copes well with cohesive materials such as clay and silty sand, which a plate compactor struggles to densify.

In practice the machine is guided by one operator walking behind it, and the compaction result is checked layer by layer: fill the trench in lifts of 20 to 30 centimetres and make two to four passes over each lift. Working this way gives an even, load-bearing base for paving, kerbstones or asphalt and greatly reduces later settlement. The low weight also means one person can lift the rammer in and out of a trench with a helper or a small crane.
