Wheels or tracks?
A wheeled excavator earns its keep on jobs that are spread out. Because it is road legal and travels at 40 km/h, it can move from one work site to the next under its own power, which removes both the cost of a low-loader and the waiting time that goes with it. On finished surfaces such as asphalt, paving stones and concrete, rubber tyres also cause far less damage than steel tracks.
A tracked machine of the same weight class still has the advantage on soft, muddy or sloping ground, where a larger contact area keeps ground pressure low.
